    Abstract

Cites observation as an important research and data collection methodology, showing how it can contribute to effective learning. Considers types of observation and relates these to the service and leisure environments in order to examine facilities and physical environments. Suggests that participation observation yields a unique perspective on the service and leisure experience and provides two examples to illustrate the way in which understanding of the effective leisure environment is enhanced through the use of observation.
