Abstract
‘21 Countries’ a ceramic installation created for the Imperial War Museum North, Manchester (February 2004).Exhibition funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. A critique of US foreign policy since 1945, the work was subsequently shown in the USA, and is now in the collection of the Museum of Arts and Design, New York.

This site-specific installation developed Dixon’s research into the traditions and contemporary applications of political satire, social commentary, and commemorative ceramics ‘21 Countries’ presented a complex visual narrative, revealed across the decorated surfaces of 21 ceramic plates conceived as a single piece. The specific context of the installation within the war museum was significant, inviting the audience to equate historical ‘fact’ with contemporary ‘reportage’. Images and narratives referencing U.S. foreign policy since 1945 were situated within the context of the political debate and public protest during the build up to the bombing and invasion of Iraq in 2003. The project focussed on the statement circulated by New Internationalist Magazine and widely published in the British press that, ‘Since the end of the Second World War, the United States Government has bombed 21 countries’. Subsequent showings of the installation in 2005 (appropriately in the U.S.A., at SOFA New York, and Clay Gallery, Venice, California) disseminated the research in an international context. The work was purchased for the permanent collection of the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, in 2006, with funding from the Howard Kottler Endowment (‘Kottler, like Dixon, saw ceramics as a powerful vehicle for conveying provocative social, political and cultural commentary’’ David Revere McFadden, museum director). Exhibition at the Imperial War Museum North was funded by a Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation exhibition award. Publication of a documentary cd-rom, ‘Stephen Dixon; 21 Countries’ was funded by ACE.
