Addresses the role of children in linguistically mediating the social, administrative and economic lives of families where adults do not speak the language of the dominant community. Based on a study of 19 children of Pakistani heritage, followed by a simulated language brokering event involving 8 children. Chapter is based on a presentation to the European Conference on Translation Studies, Ghent. A related paper was presented to the 4th International Symposium on Bilingualism, Phoenix, Arizona. All chapters in the collection were subject to 3 independent reviews. Hall has pioneered UK work in this important yet under-researched area. His study is the first to use simulation to address and minimise ethical issues, and demonstrates the considerable diplomatic skills exhibited by young children in these complex social situations. |
