'Percussion quartet' is a two-movement musical composition (c 20 minutes). The work is part of a portfolio of compositions concerned with the development of rhythmic and harmonic structures within a post-serial framework. The composition involves a practical exploration of the possibilities and tensions for the contemporary composer in a post-modern environment working from what is essentially a modernist tradition. The work examines the relationship between modernist concerns of unity in relation to postmodernist notions of fragmentation and its impact on the development of musical structures. The research questions 'Percussion quartet' poses are concerned with the technical development of harmonic and rhythmic procedures and their subsequent structural implications within i) a fragmented musical structure (movement one) and ii) a static musical structure (movement two). Movement one combines and manipulates 12 motivic fragments into a six-minute structure – see example 1 where the first 7 fragments are identified. The rhythmic activity is chaotic but each fragment is located within the structure within a process of voice-leading elongation. The second movement is an extreme contrast to the first, offering a static harmonic framework – this unfolds throughout the remaining 14 minutes. The harmonic material for the work considers and elaborates on the work of Boulez (1971). Boulez’s development of Chord Multiplication is considered and exploited within my own harmonic language. This work aims to make a contribution to the development of music composition, both as an investigation into modernist and postmodernist aesthetics and the development of technical procedures. Performed: Commissioned by BackBeat Percussion Ensemble for Concert Artists Guild International Competition 2001 (first movement only) (USA) (BackBeat awarded first prize winners); Royal Northern College of Music 2001; Alsager Arts Centre 2001 and 2005. Documentation: CD 'Percussion quartet' (2001 revised and extended 2005); score; A4 sheet; example 1 sheet. |
