    Abstract

Just under one third of British pubs are privately owned. The remainder belong to breweries or retailing companies, each of which have devised specific policies on the most profitable method of dealing with the public. Thus, about one quarter of all outlets are managed, with the profits going directly to the owner, and the remainder of the property – over two fifths of the total number of pubs in the country – being rented to individuals who trade for themselves, and retain the profits. There are around 70,000 public houses.
