Abstract

The chapter presents a case study of transformational leadership during the 2015 Chinese national football reform. The elite sport system is part of a comprehensive system governed by laws, regulations and bureaucratic control. It is a top-down system, where elite sport is part of state efforts to symbolise successful societies and build international prestige. There is strong pressure towards integration of leadership efforts between levels and specific sports. The reform of the overall football governance system demonstrates how some commercialised sports have achieved a certain level of autonomy within carefully designed political and regulatory contexts.
